環球影業是旗下公司，美國最大的電影公司之一。製作片廠和辦公室設在加利福尼亞環球城環球城廣場大街100號，位於和之間。發行、其他部門以及行政辦公室則在紐約。環球是好萊塢歷史第二悠久的電影公司。

公司成立於1912年6月8日，是的子公司之一。當時，美國獨立的老闆c.萊默爾把他的公司和n.鮑爾斯等六七家小電影公司合併，組成環球影片公司，在30～40年代成為壟斷美國電影生產和發行的8家大公司之一。萊默爾於1914年在北面建起了攝影棚和供拍外景用的場地，命名為環球城。1915年3月環球城正式開幕啟用,當年生產影片250部。

該公司在30～40年代生產了大量低成本影片，其中大多是、音樂片、恐怖片和滑稽片。如b.卡洛夫主演的恐怖片，d.竇萍主演的音樂片，b.阿博和l.卡斯特洛主演的,都有很高的票房價值,贏利頗豐。在它的產品中，像《西線無戰事》(1930)那樣的嚴肅作品極少。

和華納環球影視設備公司合併為華納環球國際公司。1952年德卡唱片公司購得了環球國際公司的大部分股票之後，恢復了舊名。以後該公司又歸公司(mca) 所有,直到80年代。50年代,一改過去大量攝製低成本片的做法，採取少拍片以提高技術質量的方針。同時，開始採用資助獨立製片人拍攝影片的方法，其中不乏成功之作，如《斯巴達克斯》(1960)。

公司集中全力提供電視片和供電視放映的影片。同時，還把環球城作為好萊塢的一個旅遊中心向旅遊者開放而利潤倍增。

70年代攝製了頗有影響的《美國風情畫》(1973)以及該公司歷史上獲利最多的娛樂影片《鯊齶》（1975，或譯《大白鯊》）。

在1999年到2003 年之間環球在國際和國內票房上都取得了不同凡響的成績比如《》、《帝國驕雄》 、《》、 《》 等等，環球出品的dvd如《》、 《8英里》、《》、《》等的銷售也列居各電影公司之首。2003年環球影業的票房收入排在全美第3。

環球於2001年開始推出的《速度與激情》系列電影，總票房已累計超過30億美元，成為歷史上最成功的賽車系列電影。於2002年開始推出的《》系列電影，獲得普遍好評，是近十年中最成功的系列影片之一，成為好萊塢動作片的新經典。

2008年，新成立的加盟環球影業旗下。

2016年4月，環球收購動畫，夢工廠2017年之後的作品轉由環球影業發行。

2005年7月30日美國通用電氣集團董事會29日正式批准其下屬的nbc(全國廣播公司)-環球電影公司收購電影公司。環球電影公司與夢工廠將就有關收購事宜進入正式談判階段。

實力雄厚的nbc-環球電影公司收購夢工廠後有望向這家私人提供強大的資金支持。而談判的難點將是如何確定夢工廠公司的價格。據估計，交易價格應在10億美元左右。

夢工廠是由著名電影導演史蒂文·史匹柏與唱片業大亨戴維·格芬及前動畫大師傑弗里·卡岑伯格於1994年聯合創立的，意在建立一個橫跨影視、動畫、音樂及電子遊戲等領域的。然而，近年來夢工廠在電視、音樂及電子遊戲等項目上的投資連遭失敗，由此傳出了唱片業出身的合伙人之一格芬萌生退意的訊息。

夢工廠成立以來一直與環球電影公司保持著密切的業務關係，它所產影片的海外發行工作以及dvd影碟的發行均由環球公司負責代理。此外，本人與環球公司也關係密切，他早期執導的影片《大白鯊》、《et外星人》和《侏羅紀公園》等都是為環球電影公司拍攝的。

“環球影業” 探索未來，抨擊邪惡，歌頌愛情，讚揚英雄，環球所拍的片子大致與這 幾條相吻合。93年一部《辛德勒的名單》不僅讓環球名利雙收，更贏得了所有猶太人的尊敬 。但回憶過去並不是它想幹的事，如何開拓未來才是主導。93年夏的《》出爐使環球贏得了科幻影場的稱號。隨後它又趁熱打鐵推出了湯姆漢克斯的《》（94年）。 不過環球也有看走眼的時候，號稱有史以來最大投資的《》不僅在票房上一敗塗地，更被影評家們批評得體無完膚。還好環球就是環球，知道何時何地拍何種影片來取悅觀眾。96年的《》98年的《》就能證明這點。而象《原色》這類影片在不同程度上引起了美國人民的共鳴。99年的《》在全球熱賣掀起一股 木乃伊熱潮。2000年，《u-571》這艘潛艇就是環球對英雄們以及崇拜英雄的民眾的最大貢獻。
