太保曾經是成家班的成員，但後來和一部分人一樣，離開了成家班。

太保從70年代開始即在電影中擔任演員，參演的電影類型非常的多，無論是當時行的殭屍片、成龍的功夫喜劇或是的福星系列、以及、古裝，都可以看見他在其中的演出，太保的表演經歷可以窺見80年代以降的20個年頭中，香港電影的一部分發展脈絡。他多半扮演反派配角，飾演人士最令人印象深刻，他也是香港幫派電影中令人感到很熟悉的面孔之一，太保並且曾經以《》一片入圍過第二十一屆金馬獎的最佳男配角。
