拍攝或是轉換成一部影片到imax 3d的決定要根據計畫而定，並且要考慮諸多因素。《極地特快：imax 3d體驗》的成功，以及許許多多其他3d影片亮相於imax影院，imax將致力於發展儘可能多的imax 3d影片。

《阿凡達》和《愛麗絲夢遊仙境》讓imax和3d成為電影的熱門辭彙。因為《阿凡達》，imax影廳的售票視窗前排了兩個多月的隊。《愛麗絲夢遊仙境》儘管普通銀幕票房表現平平，但imax 3d版仍然一票難求。因為imax 3d版電影能夠提供與傳統2d銀幕完全不同的觀影體驗，許多很少踏進電影院的觀眾也開始掏腰包買票。因為有著如此明顯的反盜版功能，imax 3d技術受到了越來越多的和導演的青睞。因為有著諸多技術規格要求，imax影院短時間內不可能成為主流，但內地觀眾能在imax銀幕上看到的電影越來越多了——2010年，我們就將看到imax版的《》和《》，以及imax 3d版的《玩具總動員3》等影片。誠如imax公司高級副總裁沙萬德所言，“中國內地是目前imax在全世界發展最迅猛的市場之一。”

在香港，一家位於鬧市商業區的新開的影院，因放映imax版《阿凡達》，僅一個月，影院成本已全面收回。在上海，和平影都的imax版《》讓觀眾排了兩個多月的隊，而該影院2010年1月和2月的票房收入已躋身全國前列。

其實，和平影都的imax影廳早在2003年底就落成，但多年來，這個國內第一塊商業imax銀幕更多的時候是“擺設”。因為在2008年9月imax影片數位化前，單個imax膠片拷貝的成本就要3萬美元，大部分電影公司以及影院都不願那么“奢侈”。

“數位化，讓imax電影的成本降低了，同時放大了imax的優勢。在北美市場，不到2%的imax銀幕，能夠創造超過10%的票房份額。”這是早報記者從imax上海辦事處了解到的情況。排除了弱勢，凸顯了優勢，imax和3d技術，正以市場難以預測的速度發展。據了解，如果不是《阿凡達》火爆得天天都要排隊買票，內地觀眾本該於2010年每月迎來一部imax新片。

2010年3月26日，導演的電影《》替換《》，成為內地大部分imax影廳的“主打”。首周末三天，《愛麗絲》6500萬元，較之《阿凡達》的三天過億元的成績，差距很明顯，但imax影廳依然一票難求。根據擁有440塊銀幕的上海聯和院線的數據顯示，《愛麗絲》放映四天，聯和院線旗下6塊imax銀幕產生了243.5萬元的票房，占到聯和院線《愛麗絲》總票房的25.34%，含金量最高。

據悉，除了《阿凡達》和《愛麗絲夢遊仙境》，今年上半年內地觀眾在imax銀幕上還將有機會看到《馴龍記》、《鋼鐵俠2》、《玩具總動員3》等影片。

越來越多的電影製作imax版本，還有像《》、《變形金剛：捲土重來》這樣直接以imax攝影機拍攝的電影。好萊塢的製片公司已經不再憂慮imax電影上映會與其他電影撞期，他們反而開始慫恿影院多開imax影廳。在中國內地，儘管2003年底就有了和平影都的這第一塊imax商業放映銀幕，但迄今為止，用以商業放映的imax銀幕數只有12塊。增長不快的原因，是大部分內地影院都選擇租用商場一層樓面建造多廳影院。而對imax影廳而言，選址時必須考慮銀幕的高度。據上海辦事處的相關人士介紹，其實，相比現代化的多廳影院，一些早年的單廳影院，甚至是社區內的活動室，更有改造成imax影廳的可行性。在《阿凡達》上映前，北京華星巨幕影院就完成了imax影廳的改造。而在採訪中，早報記者被告知，諸如天山電影院這樣地理位置優越，空間又足夠的單廳影院，只要想重新找到商機，都可以考慮進行imax影廳的改造。

雖然內地的imax銀幕數量有限，但市場已經看到了其價值潛力。所以在《阿凡達》上映前，內地突然增加了多個imax影廳。如今，不僅多個非商業用途的imax銀幕正在申請加入放映的隊伍，許多家未來的imax影廳也在積極醞釀中。

如果說《》imax版火爆還能用“意外”來形容，那么的《唐山大地震》imax版票房火爆，幾乎是可以預見的。在早報記者此次採訪中，一個事實被反覆強調，《唐山大地震》不僅是國內首部imax版電影，也是全球首部非北美製作的imax電影。而且《唐山大地震》得到的優惠政策是其他imax電影所沒有的。據了解，該片轉制imax的費用是由imax公司負責的。中國內地2010年只有12塊商業imax銀幕，其150萬美元到200萬美元的轉製成本要收回幾乎是不可能的，但imax公司依然願意嘗試。理由是，他們希望今後每年在中國內地製作兩到三部imax電影，內地的imax影廳每個月都有新片上映。由於中國內地有些檔期是被保護的，在這些時候，進口大片可能進不來。此時，中國內地本土製造的imax電影，就可以填補片單上的空白。
